What the Sauna Science Actually Says
Spend enough time reading about sauna online and things get out of hand pretty quickly.
Sauna will apparently improve your heart, protect your brain, fix your sleep, reduce stress, improve recovery, strengthen your immune system and possibly make you immortal.
We love sauna. We run saunas. We spend a slightly unreasonable amount of our lives thinking about saunas.
We still wouldn't claim most of that.
There is genuinely interesting research into sauna bathing, particularly around cardiovascular health. Some of the results are impressive. But there's an important difference between people who regularly use saunas tending to be healthier and sauna being proven to make people healthier.
That distinction gets lost quite a lot.
First, we do know heat does things to your body
Sitting in a properly hot sauna isn't physiologically neutral.
Your skin temperature rises. Blood flow to the skin increases as your body tries to lose heat. You sweat. Your heart rate rises.
Researchers looking at a single 30-minute sauna session have also measured temporary reductions in blood pressure and arterial stiffness afterwards.
So when somebody says that sauna affects your cardiovascular system, that's not controversial. It clearly does.
The harder question is what happens when you repeat that for years.
Does regularly putting your body through that heat response actually reduce your chances of developing cardiovascular disease? Does it help you live longer?
That's where things get more interesting.
The Finnish study behind a lot of sauna headlines
A huge amount of modern interest in sauna science can be traced back to research from Finland.
One particularly influential study followed 2,315 middle-aged men from eastern Finland for around 20 years. Researchers compared men who used a sauna once a week with those using one more frequently.
The frequent sauna users had substantially lower rates of sudden cardiac death, fatal cardiovascular disease and death from all causes. The association remained after researchers adjusted for things including smoking, alcohol use, physical activity, cardiorespiratory fitness, blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes and socioeconomic status.
That's interesting, though it still doesn't prove sauna caused the difference.
The men weren't randomly assigned to sauna four times a week for 20 years while another group was banned from going near one.
Researchers observed how people already lived and then looked at what happened to them.
That's a completely sensible way to study long-term health, but it creates a problem.
People who sauna might be different in other ways
Imagine two people. One regularly finds time to sauna several times a week. The other doesn't.
There could be differences between those people that have nothing to do with heat.
One might exercise more. They might eat differently. They might have more money or more free time. They might sleep better, drink less, have stronger friendships, use healthcare differently or simply be healthier to begin with.
Researchers can statistically adjust for things they know about, and the Finnish researchers did adjust for quite a few of them.
But statistics can't perfectly recreate a randomised experiment.
There will always be things that weren't measured, weren't measured particularly well, or weren't even thought about when the study began.
This is called confounding, and it comes up constantly in research about lifestyle.
It's why studies can tell us that two things are associated without necessarily telling us that one caused the other.
And quite a few famous sauna findings come from the same people
This is worth knowing because sauna research can look bigger than it is.
You might read one story saying sauna is associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular death.
Then another about hypertension.
Then another saying frequent sauna use is associated with a lower risk of dementia and Alzheimer's disease.
They sound like three completely separate discoveries.
Several of the best-known findings came from analyses of the same Finnish Kuopio Ischaemic Heart Disease cohort. For example, the dementia research followed the same group of 2,315 men originally recruited in the 1980s.
That doesn't make the findings bad.
It's a valuable long-running dataset, and researchers would be daft not to learn as much as possible from it.
But twenty papers using one group of people aren't the same thing as twenty completely independent experiments all finding the same result.
What happens when researchers actually make people sauna?
This is where the picture becomes less tidy.
In one 2022 randomised trial, 47 adults with low physical activity and at least one cardiovascular risk factor were divided between exercise, exercise followed by sauna, and a control group.
After eight weeks, the exercise-plus-sauna group had better results than exercise alone for systolic blood pressure, cardiorespiratory fitness and total cholesterol. Promising.
But it was only 47 people, and sauna was being added to an exercise programme.
Then another randomised study looked at 41 adults with stable coronary artery disease. Half were asked to sauna four times a week for eight weeks.
That study found no improvement in the vascular health measures researchers were testing, despite participants clearly adapting to the heat itself.
That's science. One study says: that's interesting. Another says: hang on. Then somebody runs a bigger experiment. We're somewhere in the middle of that process with sauna.
What about dementia and longevity?
These are probably the claims where we'd be most cautious.
Finding that regular sauna users developed dementia less often over the following decades is genuinely interesting. The Finnish study found exactly that association.
But it's a very big leap from there to:
“Sauna prevents dementia.”
The same applies to claims that sauna extends your life.
The long-term observational research gives scientists a good reason to investigate those possibilities. It doesn't give sauna businesses a good reason to promise them to customers.
If somebody can tell you exactly how many years regular sauna use will add to your life, we'd be interested to see the experiment where they worked that out.
Maybe some of the benefit isn't happening inside your arteries
This is the bit we find particularly interesting. When researchers study sauna, the obvious thing to study is heat. Blood pressure is measurable. Heart rate is measurable. Blood samples are measurable.
But going to a sauna is also something people do. It can become a routine.
You leave the house. You stop working for an hour. You put your phone away. If it's a communal sauna, you sit beside other people. You might talk to someone you know or somebody you've never met before.
Those things aren't as easy to fit into a sauna-benefits infographic. They're still potentially important.
In 2026, researchers studied 1,907 UK sauna users across three related studies looking specifically at wellbeing, social connection and ritual. They found associations between sauna use, feelings of belonging and reported physical and emotional wellbeing. Their before-and-after studies also found changes in emotional wellbeing around sauna sessions.
Importantly, the researchers themselves point out the limitations. Participants were convenience samples, many were already engaged with sauna culture, and the studies weren't controlled experiments capable of separating the heat from the social experience.
But that's partly why it's interesting.
Maybe asking “what does 80°C do to this person's blood vessels?” only captures part of what somebody gets from going to a sauna.
Healthy people tend to do healthy-person things
There's another problem that comes up when you study almost any healthy habit. People rarely change one thing.
Someone who regularly exercises might also pay more attention to their diet. Someone who has enough time and money for recreational activities might have less financial stress. Someone with a good group of friends might be more likely to have regular social plans. Someone who's already seriously unwell might stop doing activities they previously enjoyed.
That last one is particularly important.
A study of 524 Finnish men with an average age of 86 found that sauna users reported better health-related quality of life than non-users.
But many of the men who no longer used sauna had stopped because of mobility or health problems. The researchers specifically warned about reverse causality. In other words, perhaps sauna didn't make people healthier. Perhaps healthier people were simply more able to keep going to the sauna.
It's a very good example of why these studies need careful reading.
Does that mean the sauna research is rubbish?
No. It means the answer is less satisfying than a quick Instagram story would like. We’ve good evidence that sauna produces real short-term physiological changes.
We have observational evidence, including some very long-running studies, linking regular sauna use with better cardiovascular and other health outcomes.
We have some smaller controlled trials suggesting repeated heat exposure could improve certain cardiovascular risk factors.
We also have controlled research where expected improvements haven't appeared.
And we're only beginning to properly study things that sauna users have known are part of it for ages: the routine, the people, the conversation and the strange intimacy of sitting in a very hot wooden room together.
That's a much more interesting picture than saying sauna “boosts circulation”.
So, is sauna good for you?
Probably the most accurate answer is: There are good reasons to think regular sauna use can be part of a healthy life. We don't yet know exactly how much of the long-term health effect is caused by the heat itself.
And we're quite comfortable with that.
You don't need a mortality graph to justify doing something that gets you out of the house, gives you an hour away from your phone, lets you sit with other people and leaves you feeling good afterwards. If future research proves that regularly getting hot in a wooden box does a whole load of other useful things as well, excellent. We'll take it.
A quick safety note
Sauna isn't suitable for absolutely everyone.
Heat affects heart rate and blood pressure, so people with heart conditions, blood pressure problems, a history of fainting, or medication that affects blood pressure or circulation should check with an appropriate healthcare professional if they're unsure. The British Heart Foundation advises people with heart conditions or high blood pressure to seek medical advice before using saunas where sudden temperature changes are involved.
There's also limited research on sauna use during pregnancy. Current NHS guidance notes concerns around overheating, dehydration and fainting, so speak to your midwife or GP if you're unsure.
And regardless of how healthy you are, get out if you feel dizzy, faint or unwell.
Nobody gets healthier by trying to win the sauna.
